How will Al-Anon help me?
Al-Anon is a mutual support group in which we share our experience, strength and hope. Though our situations may be different, all of our lives have been affected by another person’s drinking. When we come together, we find true understanding and support. We also learn how the Al-Anon Steps, Traditions and literature can support us in our everyday lives.
Do I have to speak in front of a group?
You will never be required to speak in front of the group. Some newcomers may be ready to share right away, while others prefer to listen. Al-Anon members listen without criticizing, giving advice or passing judgment. All those who choose to speak are listened to with courtesy and respect.
What if I see someone who knows me from work, church, or some other part of my life? Will they start talking to me about Al-Anon there?
Anonymity is a principal of the Al-Anon program. This means that group members do not share – even with other family members – who was at the meeting or what was said. Members not only maintain their own anonymity, but respect the anonymity of their fellow members as well.
Is Al-Anon a religious fellowship?
Al-Anon is a spiritual program, not a religious one. An individual’s religious beliefs or denomination are not subject for discussion.
How much does Al-Anon cost?
There are no dues or fees to join Al-Anon. Voluntary contributions to the group’s expenses, such as rent, literature and phone, are accepted at each meeting with the passing of the basket.
